Testimony to the Gold Coast's claim as a legitimate business hub, in 2001 the Gold Coast accounted for 2.3% of Australia 's population, while containing 4.2% of Australia 's businesses.
On a state level, the Gold Coast accounted for 12.1% of Queensland 's population and 14.6% of businesses.

Education
The Education and Training industry of the Gold Coast has an expenditure estimated to be in excess of AUD$550 million annually and employs more than 8,000 people.
The industry includes preschool education, primary and secondary education, vocational education, universities, technical and further education, business colleges, language schools, specialised training colleges and research centres.
There are four universities in Gold Coast City; Bond University, Central Queensland University, Griffith University and Southern Cross University.
Employment in the education industry has been growing at around 8% per annum, compared to 2% per annum for Queensland , making education one of the fastest growing industries in the city. top of page

On average, the Gold Coast tourism region hosts more than 74,800 visitors everyday. Visitors will represent approximately 13% of all people in the Gold Coast tourism region on any given day (ABS, 2004). top of page
IT industry
The Gold Coast is a dynamic region and an ideal location for Information Communications Technology (ICT) companies.
A mix of small to medium enterprises and larger national and global companies such as IBM, AAPT and Austar Communications are among those that have established their presence in the region. top of page
Marine industry
More than 450 companies and 3500 employees comprise the Gold Coast marine industry, which in 2003/04 injected more than AUD$300 million into the local economy. During 2003, the industry in the marine precinct exported goods worth more than AUD$120 million to around 30 countries.
